R. Hayyim Palaggi meets a British missionary

I came across an interesting description of an encounter with R. Chaim Palaggi, Chief Rabbi of Izmir (Smyrna). The narrator is a 19th century Jewish Christian missionary, Moses Margoliouth (of whom I've written about here, here and here).

The work referred to in the account is חיים תחילה ודרכיו למשה (read it here.)

Incidentally, the Dr. Herschell referred to above is Solomon Hirschell, the de facto Chief Rabbi of the British Ashkenazim. His brother, incidentally, was Saul Berlin, forger and creator of the Besamim Rosh (although, it has to be said, this is but a footnote). Dr. Adler, of course, is Nathan Marcus Adler of Hanover, his successor as Chief Rabbi.
